How to Measure the Existing Gas Lift in Your Office Chair:
When selecting a replacement gas lift cylinder for your office chair, "Stoke" refers to the extension part of the gas lift at full height.
The overall length of the gas lift is measured to include the gas lift parts encased in the office chair (+/- 20mm) and is expressed in the specifications as a measurement ranging from height to full extension height.
To measure the overall length of your existing gas lift, position your office or lab chair at its lowest height, then measure the gas lift cylinder from the underside of the chair base to the underside of the chair mechanism. This measurement, with the gas lift fully down, is the minimum overall length. Now lift the office chair seat to its full height, where the gas lift is fully extended, and measure the cylinder from the same points to determine the gas lift's maximum Overall length.
Please Note (when measuring overall length): If the bottom of the gas lift cylinder is poking through the bottom of the chair base, measure from the end of the part poking through, rather than from the underside of the chair base.
*Morse Tapered Core is the size of the base core/hole. All of these gas lifts measure 50mm.
Key Variables to Consider:
- The "Sink" Factor: A non-drop-through lift sits entirely above the base. However, depending on the taper of the hole in your chair's base, the cylinder may sit 10mm higher or lower.
- Seat Thickness: A heavy executive chair with 120mm of foam will naturally have a higher "minimum" height than a slim mesh task chair.
- Castor Size: The table values are based on 50mm castor wheels. Upgrading to 65mm or 75mm "rollerblade"-style wheels would add roughly 15-25mm to each value in the chart above.
Estimated Seat Height Ranges by Stroke Length
Most standard office chair bases (five-star legs) have a socket height of approximately 100mm above the floor (including the 50mm castors). Additionally, the seat mechanism and cushion typically add about 80-100mm in height above the top of the gas lift.
The following table estimates the height from the floor to the top of the seat cushion
| Stroke Length | Min Seat height | Max Seat Height | Best Use Case |
| 80mm | 380mm | 460mm | Petite users / Low desk |
| 100mm | 400mm | 500mm | Standard "Task" chair height |
| 140mm | 440mm | 580mm | Standard for most adults |
| 160mm | 460mm | 620mm | Taller users / Sit-stand desk |
| 200mm | 500mm | 700mm | Draughtsman chairs / High counters |
| 270mm | 570mm | 840mm | Lab stools / Extra high benches |
